Portion Sizes

Breads, cereals, rice, and pasta

  • 1 slice of bread (hockey puck)
  • ½ cup of rice or pasta(muffin tin)
  • 1 oz of snack foods…chips and pretzels (one large handful)

Vegetable group

  • ½ cup of broccoli (light bulb)
  • ½ cup of raw or cooked vegetables (small fist)
  • 1 cup of lettuce (four leaves or tennis ball)
  • Medium potato (computer mouse)

Fruit group

  • 1 cup of fruit (baseball)
  • ½ cup of fruit (tennis ball)

Milk, yogurt, and cheese group

  • 1 cup of milk or yogurt (tennis ball)
  • Four cubes (dice size)
  • Chunk of cheese (2 dominoes)

Meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts

  • 3 oz of meat (deck of cards or cassette tape)
  • 1 small hamburger (woman’s palm)
  • ½ of whole chicken breast (woman’s palm)
  • 3 oz of fish (check book)
  • 1 handful (palm) of nuts
  • 2 tbsp of peanut butter (1tsp = one dice)

Fats, oils, and sweets

  • 1 tsp of butter (thumb print)
  • 1 tbsp mayo or salad dressing (1 spoon)
  • 1 oz chocolate (inch cube)
